YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) - A former Mineral County Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on charges accusing him of stealing a jail inmate’s medication.

Mineral County Sheriff Stewart Handte says 34-year-old Saverio “Sammy” Scarlata was taken into custody at his home in Hawthorne on Tuesday after a lengthy investigation.

KTVN-TV reports (https://tinyurl.com/kjqmp7f) that Scarlata was booked into jail in Yerington on charges of obtaining a controlled substance or prescription drug from an authorized person and filing a false report.

Handte says Scarlata was working as a deputy at the time of the incidents but subsequently terminated for unrelated personnel matters.

His bail was set at $12,500.

The case has been forwarded to the Lyon County District Attorney’s Office.
