CHICAGO (AP) - A 28-year-old northeastern Illinois man faces drugs charges after authorities allegedly seized peyote at his home.

The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1xMrkon) Wednesday that Anthony A. Vangelista is charged with manufacturing and possessing controlled substances.

A McHenry County Sheriff’s statement says authorities searched Vangelista’s Island Lake home in August.

Peyote is derived from a plant with hallucinogenic properties. It’s considered a sacred medicine by some American Indians.

During their search, bags of heroin, drug paraphernalia and a firearm were also allegedly found.

If convicted, Vangelista faces up to 30 years in prison on the manufacturing charge and up to 15 years on the possession charge. He’s being held on $100,000 bond.

Available court documents did not include a name for an attorney for Vangelista.
