SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Department of Transportation officials say they are suspending non-emergency roadwork to improve holiday traffic flow.

The department announced Wednesday that, where ever possible, all highway lanes will open through Sunday at midnight. A similar suspension of roadwork will take place for the New Year’s holiday next week.

There will still be some construction zones with lane closures on highways around the state. Transportation officials are urging drivers to slow down and drive with caution through work zones.

Work zone speed limits will be in effect where posted, even if no construction workers are present.
