ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - A 20-year-old central New York man has been found guilty of manslaughter in a head-on crash that killed two people last New Year’s Eve.

Judge John Rowley announced his verdict on Wednesday after a non-jury trial in Tompkins County Court.

The accident happened in the town of Newfield, about 40 miles northwest of Binghamton, when James Crosby of Van Etten lost control of his Chevrolet Monte Carlo on a slippery road. He hit an oncoming Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 31-year-old Samantha Aarnio of Spencer.

Crosby’s passenger, 20-year-old Derek Nichols, died at the scene. Aarnio’s mother-in-law, 67-year-old Kathy Lattimore, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Crosby was placed under house arrest wearing an electronic monitoring device until his sentencing March 20.
