CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police say a 10-year-old boy and his mother have been injured after being attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull.

The boy was bitten on his back Tuesday afternoon after police say the animal escaped from its South Side home. Police say the boy’s 41-year-old mother was attacked when she went to help her son.

They say the dog’s owner wasn’t cited because he surrendered his pet to animal care and control.

The boy and his mother were taken to the Advocate Christ Medical Center. Authorities described their conditions as stable.
