BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - A registered sex offender who was convicted of trying to get a 12-year-old girl to have sex with him has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison.

The Montana Standard reports (https://bit.ly/1vasu6l ) 54-year-old Frank Joseph Vieira was sentenced earlier this month to three life sentences without the possibility of parole for three counts of sexual abuse of children.

Prosecutors say Vieira met the girl online and the two started to exchange texts. When the girl’s parents found explicit photos on her phone they went to police. A detective posed as the girl and set up a meeting in September 2013. Vieira was arrested when he showed up.

He is one of two inmates who tried to escape from the Anaconda jail on Halloween.

Vieira was convicted of a 1995 rape in Cascade County.
