SANDY, Utah (AP) - Salt Lake County prosecutors have formally charged a 52-year-old Sandy man with murder in the shooting death of his female roommate.

Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger says Larry Graff was charged late Tuesday with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Graff was being held Wednesday in the Salt Lake County jail. His bail is set at $1.5 million.

Police say Graff shot 26-year-old Candice Melo (MELL-ow) in the head after he chased her and her male friend out of the house after an argument on Dec. 18.

Carriger says Melo was hit three times and died of her wounds about nine hours later. Her friend wasn’t hurt.

Police say Graff was arrested at the scene and acknowledged firing the weapon on purpose.
