CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) - Prince George’s County authorities say a Capitol Heights woman is dead after a fire that happened early on Christmas morning.

The Prince George’s County fire department says firefighters were called to the 900 block of Booker Drive around 2:15 a.m. Thursday. When they arrived, firefighters found a two-story duplex on fire and were told a woman was trapped on the second floor. The woman was later found dead.

Officials say a preliminary investigation indicates the fire started on the first floor and that a smoke detector did go off. An adult man was able to get to safety, but fire officials said he couldn’t reach his 87-year-old mother because of intense heat and thick smoke.

Officials did not release the woman’s name or give a cause of the fire.
