WALTERBOTO, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say three people are dead after being struck by a car along Interstate 95 after their own vehicle hit a tree.

Authorities tell local media outlets it happened in Colleton County shortly after noon on Wednesday when the victims’ car hit a tree in the median.

The two adults and an 8-year-old boy got out of the vehicle and were standing by the side of the interstate when a second car tried to stop to help. But it slid in the rain, striking all three.

The two adults died at the scene and the boy later died at a Walterboro hospital. Their names not immediately released.

Another Christmas Eve accident in the Lowcountry claimed the lives of two people who died in a head-on crash in Awendaw.
