SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Public safety officials have evacuated an apartment complex after fumes from an opened canister of pepper spray spread through the ventilation system.

The Republican reports (https://bit.ly/1t26yum ) that police and firefighters responded to the Park Edge Apartments at about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Deputy Chief Glenn Guyer of the Springfield Fire Department said residents complained of eye and throat irritation, but no one was hospitalized.

Buses were brought in for tenants to use to stay warm as officials ventilated the apartment complex. Other residents used their own vehicles.

Police are investigating.
