PARTRIDGE, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky man got an extra special present this Christmas when rescuers were able to free his dog from a cave where it had been trapped for days.

WYMT-TV (https://bit.ly/16TI8OY) reports crews were able to free the animal, named Jane, early Thursday from a cave on Black Mountain in Letcher County.

Owner Lonnie Lewis says it is the “best Christmas” he’s ever had now that his dog is safe and back home.

Several agencies had participated in a rescue effort on Monday, but called it off because efforts became too risky.

That led the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter to reach out for more help, which brought in cave divers from other areas.

The station reports they worked for 12 hours beginning on Wednesday to free the dog.
