DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Police in Durham say one of their officers returned fire when a suspect fired at him as he investigated a report of two suspicious people.

A police statement Friday morning said the officer was not hit and it was not known if the suspects were hit.

An officer was investigating two males walking near an abandoned apartment building around 10 p.m. Thursday when he reported that one of the suspects fired six shots at him. One of the bullets hit the officer’s vehicle.

Police said area hospitals had been alerted to watch for anyone who showed up with a gunshot wound.

A police spokeswoman did not immediately return messages Friday morning seeking more information.
