LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) - A sexual assault and domestic violence shelter displaced by the plans for a new courthouse in La Grande is moving to new quarters with the help of a $75,000 settlement from Union County.

The La Grande Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1CMQrJB) that leaders of Shelter from the Storm and the county announced the settlement in a joint statement.

The shelter resisted the county’s move to demolish its current quarters on county-owned land, but gave up an appeal. It now says it plans to relocate in nearby Island City east of La Grande by Jan. 5.

County Commissioner Mark Davidson says negotiations resulted in an agreement calling for a lump-sum payment rather than ongoing support.

The county hopes to break ground on the courthouse in February.
