BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a western New York man charged with killing an infant boy earlier this month is on life support at a Buffalo hospital after trying to hang himself in jail.

Officials in Genesee County tell local media that 28-year-old Jeffrey Deats is on a ventilator and isn’t expected to survive.

He was charged last week with manslaughter for the Dec. 14 death of 6-month-old Chandler Zuch. Authorities said an autopsy indicated the boy suffered multiple injuries to his brain.

Officials at the county jail say Deats tied a bedsheet around his neck last Sunday night in attempt to commit suicide. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where tests have revealed he has no brain activity.
