DECATUR, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a Wise County homeowner fatally shot a man who tried to jump his fence and then demanded to be let into the home during an altercation in the yard.

The incident happened early Friday morning. Wise County Sheriff David Walker says the homeowner did not know the 31-year-old man.

Authorities say after someone repeatedly rang the doorbell and knocked on the door, the homeowner armed himself and went outside. The homeowner then saw a man trying to scale a fence to get into his backyard.

Walker says the homeowner and the man got into an altercation as the stranger demanded to be let into the house

Walker says the homeowner called police to report someone was trying to break into his home before the shooting.
