LAFAYETTE, N.Y. (AP) - State police say southbound stretch of Interstate 81 south of Syracuse remains closed after a tractor-trailer carrying pesticides caught fire.

Troopers say a truck owned by West Chester, Pennsylvania-based A. Duie Pyle Co. was traveling south on I-81 when it caught fire because of a mechanical issue. Police say the driver pulled over on the right shoulder between exits 16 and 15 in Lafayette, 10 miles south of Syracuse.

Troopers say the trailer filled with 40 50-gallon drums of the pesticide pyrethroid became fully engulfed in flames. The fire was allowed to burn until all the material was consumed.

The highway was closed in both directions until the northbound lanes were reopened around 4:30 a.m. The southbound lanes are expected to reopen at noon.

No injuries are reported.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
