TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say that they have charged five men with drug distribution after they were arrested in an undercover investigation known as “Operation Speed Racer.”

Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman announced the indictments Monday and said that the five Mexican nationals were arrested in July. Hoffman said one of the men was shot at by a State Police trooper when he drove toward officers.

Hoffman says that the operation netted 2 kilograms of methamphetamine and two kilograms of heroin.

Hoffman says that 24-year-old Juan Gutierrez-Valencia, of Pemberton, 35-year-old Guadalupe Madrigal-Mejia, 47-year-old Juan Mendez, and 33-year-old Antonio Esqueda, all of New Egypt, and 30-year-old Elias Corona-Sanchez, of North Hanover, were arrested.

Gutierrez-Valencia was shot in the arm as he tried to flee police.

It wasn’t clear if the men had attorneys.
