NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - A Delaware firefighter trying to help someone who had been in a crash is in the hospital after being hit by a car on Interstate 95 in Pennsylvania.

Daniel Callaway is an EMT and a 31-year-old firefighter at the Wilmington Manor Fire Company in New Castle, Delaware. He was on his way to work Sunday morning when he saw a one-vehicle crash in Tinicum Township, Pennsylvania.

As he was helping the driver involved in the crash, fire officials say another car hit the disabled vehicle, which then hit Callaway. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but was reportedly stable by Monday.

Callaway’s father tells WCAU-TV in Philadelphia that the family expects Daniel Callaway to survive.

The driver of the car that hit Callaway stayed at the scene.
