CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (AP) - An expert on the Empire State’s Dutch heritage is giving a talk at a gathering of the Holland Society of New York.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports (https://bit.ly/1vUlL3U ) that Russell Shorto will give a presentation Monday night at a public library in suburban Clifton Park for the annual meeting of the group’s Albany branch.

Shorto is the author of 2004’s, “The Island at the Center of the World,” which tells the story of the Dutch settlement of Manhattan and how it shaped America. He says the Dutch played a major role in developing democracy in the New World.

Shorto conducted much of his research in Albany at the New Netherland Research Institute at the New York State Library.

He says his next book will address the Dutch role in the American Revolution.
