MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Myrtle Beach police have formed a strategic planning unit to oversee efforts to maintain order during the Memorial Day weekend Atlantic Beach Bikefest.

Area media outlets report the two officers will coordinate a safety plan to deal with the influx of visitors.

Officials have been working on a safety plan following violence that left three dead last Memorial Day. Next year a 23-mile, one-way traffic loop will help control traffic at night during the long weekend.

Tens of thousands come to the beach not only for Bikefest, but for Myrtle Beach Military Appreciation Days and the traditional start to the summer season.

In addition to Memorial Day, the planning unit will work with other city departments to make sure other special events have adequate security.
