NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A plan to build a welcome center on the grounds of Newport’s most famous mansion is getting its final hearing before zoning officials in Newport.

Monday’s zoning board hearing will be the third on the plan to build a visitors center at The Breakers by the Preservation Society of Newport County. The board is promising a decision on Jan. 5.

The group says the $4.2 million visitor center will better serve the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the national historic landmark every year. The mansion was built by the Vanderbilt family in the 1890s.

Opponents of the project include neighbors and members of the Vanderbilts, who say the center will detract from the grounds.
