RODANTHE, N.C. (AP) - The only road connecting Hatteras Island to the mainland has been reopened after a combination of high tide and a storm pushed water onto the road.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said NC Highway 12 north of Rodanthe was back open Monday afternoon. It was closed for several hours earlier in the day because a combination of high tide and strong onshore winds from a Nor’easter moving off the coast flooded the road.

Officials warn the road may be closed again over the next few days at high tide as the onshore winds are expected to persist.

The DOT says water washed over other parts of NC 12 at Kitty Hawk, Buxton and Avon, but the highway has not had to be closed in those areas.
