CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty Chicago Police sergeant shot and killed a man after seeing the man shoot someone else in a local tavern.

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that the shooting happened Sunday evening at the Blackthorn Pub on the city’s southwest Side. Police say after the sergeant witnessed the shooting he identified himself as a police officer and ordered the 45-year-old man to drop his weapon. Police say the sergeant shot the man after the man pointed his gun at him and other patrons.

The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office says the man’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The man shot by the gunman was taken to an area hospital. His condition wasn’t immediately known.
