COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - It’s enough to drive a person crazy: You can’t use credit or debit cards at Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices.

The agency says it’s remedying the situation and hopes to take the cards for the first time by the end of next year.

The cards will be accepted as payment for driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals and other transactions at the state’s 192 BMV deputy registrar offices.

The agency has been working with the state treasurer’s office to put the plan in place, spokeswoman Lindsey Bohrer told the Columbus Dispatch for a story Monday (https://bit.ly/1wnYQkX ).

Until last year, government agencies were not allowed to pass along credit-card fees to consumers, making it too expensive to accept cards for state business transactions, Bohrer said.

The agency hasn’t set fee amounts yet, but they would likely be less than the current $2.50 to $3 fee for using ATMs located inside many registrar offices.

A bill introduced earlier this year would have required that the cards be accepted, but sponsor Anthony DeVitis, a Republican state representative from Green in northeastern Ohio, said it appears the legislation won’t be needed.

DeVitis said two of every three payments at his own business, involving specialty Italian foods, are made with cards. “People just don’t pay with cash anymore,” he said. “Everything’s electronic.”

The BMV is also launching “BMV in a Box,” a pilot program to place self-service terminals dispensing vehicle registrations and stickers in some stores in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati starting early next year.

“Our goal is to let people choose when and where they receive BMV services,” said state Public Safety Director John Born.
