SAO PAULO (AP) - The eight-time national champion Palmeiras has fired coach Dorival Jr. after narrowly escaping relegation in the Brazilian football league.

Palmeiras made the announcement Monday, a day after it retained its place in the top flight thanks to Vitoria’s 1-0 loss to Santos in the competition’s final round. Palmeiras was held to a 1-1 home draw by Atletico Paranaense, enough to finish two points ahead of Vitoria.

Dorival Jr., a former Palmeiras player, was hired in September to replace Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca, who was fired only three months into the job after losing seven of nine league matches.

Palmeiras lost five of its last six games under Dorival Jr., who led the team to six wins, five draws and nine losses.

Palmeiras has won the most Brazilian titles.
