DELAVAN, Wis. (AP) - Authorities say a 61-year-old man has died in an apartment fire in southeast Wisconsin.

The Delavan Police Department said a woman living in an upper-level apartment reported smelling smoke and hearing an alarm coming from an apartment below early Sunday. The caller and another person escaped before authorities arrived.

Authorities say a police officer who arrived at the scene tried to enter the lower apartment but was driven back by smoke and heat.

Firefighters later found the man badly burned inside the lower apartment. Responders couldn’t revive him.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and say the damage was contained to the lower unit. No other injuries were reported.

The fire’s cause is unclear. The state Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate.
