SUMMERFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The former site of an elementary school in western Illinois is now under the ownership of a roofing company.

The owner of the New Baden-based company purchased the property containing Summerfield Grade School at an auction this weekend for $67,000. Terry Calvert of Crown Roofing and Exteriors tells the Belleville News-Democrat (https://bit.ly/1BtFxYI ) he plans to use part of the 16,000-square-foot building for storage, and then rent out the rest of the space.

He says he would like to convert the gymnasium into a rentable space for recreational activities.

Construction of the school, which is made up of nine classrooms, a cafeteria, office and gymnasium, began in 1952. The building has been vacant since it was closed by the Lebanon School District in 2010.
