BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police say a man held an attempted robbery suspect who attacked his wife at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police Lt. Sean Edwards tells Al.com (https://bit.ly/1AaYHP2 ) the woman was returning home from walking the dog Tuesday morning when a man approached from behind, forced his way into the house and pushed her to the floor.

Authorities say the woman’s husband awoke and rushed into the living room. Police say the two men started fighting while the woman called police. Authorities say the fight eventually moved into the couple’s bedroom and the woman’s husband was able to find his shotgun and hold the intruder at gunpoint until officers arrived.

The suspect’s identity hasn’t been released yet. Authorities say the man is at the Birmingham City Jail waiting charges.
