BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort merchants say what is good during the holidays is good during the rest of the year.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1AaCOiH ) that 300 signatures have been placed on an online petition calling for the two-hour free holiday parking downtown to be extended year-round.

Local merchant Tony Royal suggested extending the free parking during a city council meeting last month. The free parking now runs from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day and is intended to encourage people to shop downtown.

The online petition warns that if parking rates remain unchanged and shoppers avoid the downtown area, many businesses in the city’s Bay Street business district will have to move.
