WOODS CROSS, Utah (AP) - Police in the northern Utah city of Woods Cross say a bicyclist struck and killed by a train Tuesday morning was a 49-year-old Woods Cross man.

Det. Chris Hoffman says Jesse Western was pronounced dead at the scene after he was hit by a Union Pacific train around 6 a.m.

No other injuries were reported.

Police don’t know why Western was crossing the tracks near 900 West and 1500 South.

Hoffman says the train hit the back of Western’s bicycle so it’s possible he was trying to beat the train through the crossing.

He says the railroad’s signal lights were on and the arms were down when the train came through.

The Utah Transit Authority temporarily halted nearby FrontRunner trains after the accident but traffic resumed by 7:30 a.m.
