HOUSTON (AP) - A former girlfriend of an 18-year-old accused of killing a girl in a satanic ritual testified Tuesday, saying she feared for her life when he discussed the slaying several days after it happened.

Agapita Gonzales, who gave birth to Jose Reyes’ child in May 2013, said she lived with Reyes and his family but stopped seeing him romantically in February. The 20-year-old said she overheard him talking with his sister about an assault, the Houston Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1BwQp89 ) reported.

“I just remember him talking about killing her,” Gonzales said. “Corriann Cervantes.”

Prosecutors say Reyes killed Cervantes on Feb. 4 in a vacant apartment southeast of Houston. A 16-year-old boy also is charged and is expected to stand trial later.

The two boys were hoping to make a deal with the devil when they disfigured the girl’s body, including carving an upside-down crucifix on her stomach, according to prosecutors.

Authorities say Cervantes had been strangled with a belt, struck in the face with a heavy porcelain toilet lid and stabbed multiple times .

A message seeking comment was left Tuesday with defense attorney Jerald Graber, who has previously told the newspaper that the defense team would “zealously represent” Reyes.

If convicted, Reyes faces an automatic life sentence. The trial is expected to last a week.
