FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California teenager has been arrested on suspicion of trying to kill his family by burning down their home.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1ywsC72 ) the 17-year-old Fontana boy allegedly put paper on the kitchen stove and ignited the burners while his mother and at least one other person were sleeping.

The teen was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Fontana police Lt. Gary Aulis says the suspect said he set the fire to kill his family.

Aulis says he was booked at Juvenile Hall after undergoing a mental health evaluation.

Police did not release his name because he is a minor.
