PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Police have arrested one man as they investigate a series of cocaine overdoses in Chatham County that killed three people and made 11 more people sick.

Multiple media outlets reported that 38-year-old Edwin Maurice Pennix of Siler City was arrested earlier this week and is being held in the Chatham County jail.

Pennix is charged with one felony count of sale and delivery of cocaine, one felony count of sale and delivery of marijuana, and one felony count of conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine. He has a hearing Dec. 17.

Authorities said the overdoses involved a combination of cocaine and a powerful painkiller Fentanyl,

Those who died were 42-year-old Michael Currie of Bear Creek, 24-year-old Randal Welch of Franklinville and 23-year-old Perry Saunders of Aurora, Missouri.
