SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Scottsdale police say a 28-year-old man is hospitalized after being shot Monday night during a confrontation with a neighbor of his estranged girlfriend.

Officer Kevin Watts says a man broke into 35-year-old woman’s apartment around 11:30 p.m. and tried to prevent her from leaving. However, the woman broke free and knocked on neighbors’ doors to get help.

Watts says a 40-year-old man let her into his apartment, and the boyfriend entered and struggled with the neighbor.

According to police, the neighbor was in fear for his life and he shot the other man in the chest. The wounded man then ran away and collapsed about 150 yards away.

Watts says the wounded man was taken to a hospital where he is in serious condition.

His identity wasn’t released.
