HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) - Investigators are awaiting further tests as they try to determine if heroin caused the deaths of a mother and father in Haverhill.

Authorities said the bodies of the 39-year-old man and 36-year-old woman were found in the family’s home Saturday by the couple’s two children, ages 8 and 10.

Haverhill Mayor James Fiorentini says the deaths are being investigated as possible heroin overdoses, pending the results of autopsies and toxicology reports. He tells The Boston Globe there has been an “epidemic” of heroin-related deaths in his city this year.

The Globe reported that heroin is suspected in more than 130 deaths this year in Essex County, which includes Haverhill.

Authorities have not released the names of the couple who died last weekend. Their children are now living with their grandmother.
