MARION, Ala. (AP) - Prosecutors in west Alabama say a 20-year-old woman who dumped her newborn baby in a trash can outside her mother’s house will be charged with attempted murder.

Authorities said a newborn baby was found in a trash can in Perry County on Monday. The baby and mother are both hospitalized.

District Attorney Michael Jackson said Tuesday that the baby appears to be in good condition, but the woman’s attempted murder charge will be upgraded to capital murder if the baby doesn’t survive.

Jackson says the woman cut the baby’s umbilical cord with a razor and told an older relative, who found the baby and called police.

Jackson says the woman will be arrested once she’s discharged from the hospital.
