SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - A Saginaw man serving a life prison sentence without parole for killing a 6-year-old girl in a 2012 has received a second such sentence for killing his son’s mother in 2013.

The Saginaw News (https://bit.ly/1ufxlmm ) says that Saginaw County Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson gave Michael Lawrence his second life sentence Monday for the first-degree felony murder of 23-year-old Angelica Olivarez. Jackson sentenced him in February for slaying Lay’la Jones in a drive-by shooting.

Lawrence proclaimed his innocence before he was escorted out of the courtroom. A jury convicted him in October of strangling Olivarez in her home in April 2013.

Lawrence was on the run at the time from the charges he faced in the Jones case. Police arrested in in Las Vegas in August 2013 after a yearlong manhunt.

Olivarez’s mother, Theresa Medel, read a prepared statement on behalf of the family.

“I hope the defendant realizes what he has done to his own son and how this will affect his life,” Medel said. “Will the defendant be prepared to answer his son, should he decide to come to him one day and ask him, ‘Why?’

Before giving Lawrence the mandatory sentence under Michigan law, the judge told him: “You’ll have a lifetime to think about the actions you’ve taken, the lives you’ve affected negatively, and the lives you’ve taken.”
