HOUSTON (AP) - Houston-area authorities say two jailers have been hospitalized after an inmate attacked them with the sharpened end of a hair brush.

The Houston Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1AYFpgL ) 33-year-old Waylin Alford was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant on Monday. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says Alford attacked the guards after refusing to be handcuffed during a sanitation check. A spokeswoman says Alford charged a jailer before he could use pepper spray. The officer was cut on his ear, temple and scalp. She says a second officer who tried to subdue Alford suffered a hand injury.

Both officers were taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Alford has an attorney.
