SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - A Sparks woman who reportedly was suffering from mental illness has been arrested on suspicion of torturing and killing two of her cats.

Sparks Police Lt. Chad Hawkins says officers were called to the home of Elizabeth Bergland last week after her mother reported her daughter had a mental breakdown and had become delusional.

Hawkins told KOLO-TV (https://tinyurl.com/m6fjcgc) on Monday that detectives determined she had strangled one cat with an electrical cord and then set it on fire. He says she killed the other by striking it with a golf club.

Bergland has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty and torture, and one count of third-degree arson.
