VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say thieves are targeting mailboxes in Ventura County, taking credit card applications as well as any other items of value they come across.

The Ventura County Star reported Monday (https://bit.ly/1G9Ri6s ) that police in Moorpark said 18 mail thefts were reported over the past weekend.

Camarillo and other locations have also seen a spike in residential and business mailbox thefts.

Julie Novak, a detective with Camarillo police, says those mailing off payments should do so at a post office.

Residents are also urged to check their credit reports for possible identity theft at least once a year.
