TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The Toledo area is seeing an increase in serious flu cases and flu hospitalizations in line with an uptick across the state.

The Toledo-Lucas health department reports 33 people hospitalized with flu-related illnesses in the Toledo area and one influenza-related death as of Nov. 29, with local hospitals reporting numbers approaching 50 or more.

The Blade reports Tuesday (https://bit.ly/162xm8E ) that the area saw only two hospitalizations and no deaths at this point last year.

The increase follows a warning by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that this year’s flu vaccine may not protect against the dominant flu strain as well.

The state Health Department says the numbers of flu-associated hospitalizations in Ohio are significantly higher with 202 through November compared with 89 last year.
