SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Members of a Utah K-9 unit proved they were top dogs recently after winning first prize in a national competition in Las Vegas.

Unified Police Department’s K-9 unit was named the top law enforcement agency from the national K-9 trials in October.

The animals were judged on obedience, searching ability and protection of their handlers.

The police department announced the award in a statement Monday.

Unified Police competed in the event after winning the same award at a state competition in September.

Six Utah police K-9 teams competed in that event.
