RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Commonwealth University is joining an advanced manufacturing research center in Prince George County.

Officials say the Richmond school is joining the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing as an academic member.

The center does research for a group of manufacturing companies under a partnership with several Virginia universities.

In addition to VCU, the center’s academic members include Virginia Tech, Virginia State University and the University of Virginia and Old Dominion University.

The consortium that supports the center’s research includes Rolls-Royce, Newport News Shipbuilding and Siemens.

Officials say the center bridges the gap between research and commercialization by accelerating new manufacturing technology developments.
