HOUSTON (AP) - A 385-pound pachyderm has made his public debut at the Houston Zoo just days after being born.

Zoo officials say the male elephant named Duncan went on display this week, sticking close to his mom named Shanti (SHAWN’-tee).

Duncan was born last Friday. Zoo authorities say the calf has been adjusting well and bonding with his mother while learning to nurse.

Duncan joins other elephants on display at the zoo’s McNair Asian Elephant Habitat.

Mammal curator Daryl Hoffman says the elephant keepers picked the name Duncan - just because they like the way it sounds.
