RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A flu-related death in South Dakota last week has pushed the season total to 10, though state health officials say the rate of illness appears to be declining in the state.

The Rapid City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1dkfTcx ) that flu activity in the state has been downgraded from widespread to regional. The peak appears to have been the first week of January.

So far this season there have been 496 lab-confirmed cases of the flu, with 164 hospitalizations.

Last year, 38 deaths in South Dakota were tied to the flu.
