BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - State officials say qualifying for spring municipal elections has been suspended in seven of the 34 parishes scheduled to begin signing up candidates Wednesday.

Secretary of State Tom Schedler said qualifying will be extended in Bienville, DeSoto, LaSalle, Ouachita, Richland, Union and West Carroll after courthouses in those areas were closed because of severe winter weather.

Schedler says candidates in those parishes will get an extra day to qualify on Feb. 18, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to make up for the closure. Monday, is Presidents’ Day, a federal holiday, so clerks’ offices will be closed.

Qualifying in the other 27 parishes ends Friday.

Primary elections will be held Saturday, April 5. General elections will be May 3.
