The Sons of Confederate Veterans have won Georgia’s approval for new custom license plates that feature the Confederate battle symbol spanning the entire plate.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the group’s previous plates showed only a small square symbol of their organization, which also featuring the Confederate emblem.

Now, the emblem, though slightly faded, takes up the entire plate. Georgia’s Department of Revenue approved the plates on Feb. 1.

“The new design of the SCV’s special license plate features a much more prominent logo of the organization with larger stars and a beautiful Confederate battle flag image in the background and covering the entire size of the plate,” the Sons of Confederate Veterans said in a press release. “Additionally, the plate features a gold frame with the words ‘Sons of Confederate Veterans’ displayed where the county name was previously featured on the plates.”

The group said a financial contribution of $10 from the tag fee is made to the Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans “to promote Southern Heritage through educational activities and preservation efforts around the state.”

Gov. Nathan Deal said he was unaware of the new plates.

“I hadn’t heard that so I don’t know anything about it. I’ll have to talk to them about it. I had no information in advance about it,” he told the Journal-Constitution.

Georgia’s state flag used from 1956 to 2001 featured a prominent Confederate battle flag, but the design was repealed in 2001 because some argued it was a symbol of racism.
