FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Fresno police say a teenager was fatally shot by an officer after the suspect fled a car during a traffic stop.

The Fresno Bee reported (https://bit.ly/1h6DRsy ) that the shooting occurred Sunday after police pulled over a red BMW with three occupants that had no license plates and had made an illegal U-Turn.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer says two passengers fled the car, and that an officer noticed that one appeared to be carrying a silver semi-automatic handgun.

One suspect escaped, but an officer chased the other through an apartment complex, and eventually opened fire.

Dyer says the department does not yet know what events led to the shooting, other than that the officer believed the 18-year-old suspect was armed.
