CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. (AP) - Chimney Rock State Park will remain closed for a little longer due to winter weather which delayed repairs to the entrance.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (https://bit.ly/ODyDe0) that Chimney Rock Access will not open on Saturday as planned. The N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation said the road was supposed to be closed no longer than three weeks and that the park would close in late January.

In May, a 75-foot section of the road collapsed during a period of heavy rainfall. A contractor is replacing a retaining wall that supports the section of roadway near the park entrance.

But due to extreme weather conditions earlier this month, completion of the roadwork has been delayed. The closure affects the Chimney Rock spire, the Outcroppings trail and other nearby visitor facilities.
