MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s new cartoonist laureate says the honorary position is indicative of Vermont’s independent and persnickety character.

Ed Koren’s appointment became official with a Statehouse ceremony Wednesday. He is the second person named to the three-year post, following James Kolchalka of Burlington.

Koren, who lives in Brookfield, has had his work published in The New Yorker for more than 50 years. He told Vermont Public Radio (https://bit.ly/N75fMd ) that this is a difficult time for single-panel cartoonists like himself, but he believes the success of graphic novels bodes wells for illustrators. He credits the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction with creating a robust atmosphere for cartoonists and graphic novelists.
